Is the Colon the Key to Healing?

For many the colon just may be the key to healing.  Do you eat the right foods, move your body and yet, still still struggle to lose weight?  Do you have an insatiable appetite?  Feel sluggish and tired often?  Have any type of degenerative diseases?  The colon may be something to look at!

Our colon is a part of the alimentary canal, a tube starting at the mouth and ending at the anus.  The colon is where the majority of the nutrients from the foods we eat are assimilated into the body.  It also eliminates waste and absorbs water from foods.  When we eat, our intestinal tract goes into peristalsis, a wavelike movement to keep the food moving through till it exits.

Picture your intestinal tract like a hose with the outer covering of the hose acting as a screen.  Because of all of the pockets (diverticuli) along the tract, the surface area of our hose can become coated with waste.  These areas are rarely cleared because of the enormous amounts and constant flow of foods.  At present, it is said that most people are carrying around 5-10 lbs of fecal mucoid matter in their colons.  We are all “Full of Sh*t.”  Not a very pleasant thought, I know, but just think about what this funk is doing in your system.

For years, I neglected to look at the colon as a potential solution for my clients.  Many times, clients would be eating all the “right” foods, exercising plenty and yet, not seeing or feeling the benefits.  Why would this be?  One possible reason is the colon.  When the intestinal tract is clogged, one may experience uncontrollable hunger and even disease – as a result of the bodies inability to take in what it needs or eliminate what it doesn’t.  Jeremy Safron, author of The Fasting Handbook, says “every ailment is a result of poor elimination or a lack of assimilation.”  He goes on to say that, “some of the best fed people in the world suffer from malnutrition.”  It makes sense… the clearer the hose is of obstructions, the more nutrients we will benefit from.

During a fast, much of the peristalsis stops and our colons are able to empty.  But, because of all of the little pockets, much of the debris still remains.  I have fasted and done cleanses for years and had never done more than an herbal laxative tea until I went to Thailand.  During my 14 day fast of coconut water, I did 2 enemas a day while receiving intestinal massages.  After the 10th day of fasting and enemas, I went to a clinic to experience a “high colonic” or colonic therapy.  Who would have thought that after 10 days of not eating and 20 enemas that I would have anything left inside to eliminate.  Boy was I wrong.  Pounds of fecal mucoid, that the technician said, may have been lodged in me for years, came out.  I have to say, I was surprised and thrilled at the same time.

As if that is not enough of a reason to clean our pipes, another fellow faster at the healing center passed over 6 ft of worms (parasites).  Yes, I said 6 ft and get this, it is said that about 95% of us have them living inside of us.  Our facilitator, Hillary was tickled by this news and proceeded to show us a beautiful collection of pictures featuring “Worms excreted by fasters.”  Just think… you too could be housing a few of these parasites, completely rent free!

There are many ways we can clean our innards.  Enemas, colonics, herbal teas (with senna, cascara sagrada or mandrake), psyllium husk, raw foods, messages, internal salt water baths or even good old, prune juice (fresh from soaking prunes in water overnight).  Blessed Herbs provides high quality, herbs for cleansing.

There is much controversy over the benefits of colonics and enemas.  I can only speak about my experience and can say that I noticed the difference of getting the funk out.  Do your research and listen to your intuition, but regardless of your thoughts, with all of these cleansing methods, it is important to reseed your intestinal tract with healthy flora afterwards.  The healthy intestinal bacteria can be cleansed away and cause problems if its not replaced.  Consuming large amounts of acidophilus and eating bifudus rich foods, such as cabbage, yogurt, miso and sauerkraut will help with the process.

Any questions, feel free to email me.  Love to hear your thoughts.

Namaste.

Thank you for sharing your situation with me. I know fasting may seem scary and quite intimidating. Next to water and air, food is pretty important?. Certainly working with a coach through it or educating yourself on it as much as possible will remove much of the fear. My tip for you would be … do your research then listen to your intuition as to whether or not it is right for you. Once you make your decision, do not share it with anyone. Remember Chandal, most people fear what they do not understand. With good intention, they will share their fears with you and you may second guess yourself. You soul knows what you body needs to heal itself. Not I nor anyone else knows better. Fasting is the oldest and most natural process of healing. Babies and animals fast when they get sick. And many times, when we are going through stressful situations, we intuitively stop eating (lose our appetite) so our body can heal itself of the stressors being released into the body.

Chandal, you felt inspired to write me for a reason. Trust in that guidance. If I can be of any assistance as you move forward with your decision, I am here for you.

    Love and Light,

    Patrick O’Connor

I have been on and off fasting for the last few weeks. For years I have eaten a VERY poor diet consisting of probably 85%-95% sugar only. Yes, terrible I know :o ( I’ve been trying juice fasts, but what I really want to do is an extended water fast. I think though that I may have some blood sugar problem because after a certain period of time without eating I become very hot, weak, paranoid, and anxious… no matter what I try to tell myself. Do you think that if I do a long juice fast and then follow it by a water fast I may have better luck with this little problem? I am very determined but I am forced to work at least 8 hours evey day. My job is moderately phyical also, so I was just wondering if you could advise me? I have been researching like crazy, but I just cant seem to determine an appropriate course of action.

  4. One of the quickest way to rid ourselves of sugar cravings is to reset our taste buds back to natural foods through fasting. Most have lost touch with our natural desires for fruits and veggies because of the onslaught of highly processed, sugary foods. Sugar is poison in our bodies and doing an extended fast can certainly break this addiction. Like most addictions however, they can return. Sugar and caffeine are two of the most addictive and destructive drugs because of the availability and acceptability of them. Do the best you can. Commit to doing a fast longer than 7 days and you will see your desire for sugar wane. The longer you fast, the more you cleanse and your body will not only lose its desire for foods that do not serve you, but will actually reject them.

    Wishing you well.

    Patrick
