Many believe periodic juice fasting is the key to preventing and reversing disease, permanent and effortless weight loss and dramatically slowing the aging process.  All of the patients here at St. Theodore’s Hospital on the Therapeutic Fasting program have shown remarkable recovery to health, completely reinforcing my belief in fasting.

Changing times call for a change in the way we live.  Today’s world is more toxic than ever before; from the foods we eat to the water we drink and the air we breathe – nothing is free from its effects.  As a result, our innate ability to detoxify is being overloaded, causing an accumulation of toxins leading to disease.  Over the last 50 years, the increase of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension and other “lifestyle” diseases have increased significantly.   Unlike the infectious diseases of the early 1900’s, these diseases are a result of years of toxic build up.

What has changed?  Combine an increase of fast “fatty” foods, highly processed “man made” foods, hormone-injected animals (meats and dairy), pesticide-ridden crops, depleted soils, increased noise and air pollution and you have the perfect recipe for a toxic overload.  The result… living too short and dying too long!

So… short of living in a bubble, what can we do about it? 
Learn to adapt to the world as it is today.

Since we know toxins are increasing and disease is the result of an accumulation of those toxins, we must find more efficient and effective ways to detoxify our bodies, minds and emotions.  Instead of letting the toxins accumulate and relying on the doctors to fix us when our bodies finally lose the toxic battle, we can clean our house (detoxify) periodically so the toxins never have a chance to take over.

I believe the answer to taking complete control of your health is periodic juice fasting.  Juice Fasting is a process of internal house cleaning.  When we juice, our body experiences a “spring cleaning;” ridding us of the toxins that have accumulated over the years, or since your last fast.  And, as a result of flooding your body with fruits and vegetables for an extended period of time, you will naturally reestablish a desire for whole, healthy foods making food choices less challenging.

As with everything in life, fasting as a lifestyle is a process.  Each time you fast, the cleansing deepens and your eating habits will change.  You may lose the desire to eat some foods, while gaining a taste for others.  Decisions as to what to eat will become more intuitive and less stressful.  In my next blog, I will discuss how periodic fasting leads to a life of eating what you want.

When, how long, and how often?

How often you fast depends on several factors, including your intentions and reasons for fasting, current health, diet, activity level, weight, environment, emotional state and mental attitude.  All of these, as well as your own intuition, will be your guide as to when and how often you will want to clean house.  Typically, for a general detoxification of your system, 7-10 days of juice fasting will do the trick.  However, if you are currently on medications or have been diagnosed with an illness, 30 -40 days of fasting may be necessary;  then periodic fasting of 7-10 days (quarterly, bi-annual or yearly) for maintenance to keep you healthy may suffice.

As global consciousness continues to expand, periodic fasting will begin to unravel the maze and confusion of disease, the profitable drug industry and our highly influenced, medical system.  We are living in an age where we are becoming less dependent on others and more self-sustaining in all areas of our lives.  Certainly health is no exception.  There is a reason the most enlightened individuals throughout history have fasted.  Fasting is a way to reclaim your health, and redevelop a relationship with your own internal wisdom.  With this more open channel of communication you are able to hear the subtle messages of your body, way before it has to shout to get your attention.
