Exploring the Shadow

baby“The most enlightened people in the world embrace their full potential of light and dark. When you’re with people who recognize and own their negative qualities, you never feel judged by them. It’s only when people see good and bad, right and wrong, as qualities outside themselves that judgments occur.” ~ Deepak Chopra from The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire

This is beautiful! What Deepak is saying is that if we cannot acknowledge and embrace all parts of ourselves, we will be affected (positively or negatively)by anyone who has those same characteristics. Most often this is seen as judgment of those qualities we deem to be bad or wrong, but it also works with the other parts that we see as extraordinary.

When we have not owned parts of ourselves we view as “bad or wrong”, we project them onto others, making them wrong. We immediately go into judgment mode and consequently, our inner peace erode. This is such a powerful awareness. Over time, I have grown to embrace the experience of having someone press my buttons. It’s not always easy, especially when they are pushing those deepest and most powerfully rooted ones, but it can become a game and an opportunity to grow in your awareness of the self.

Exercise… The next time someone annoys you or presses your buttons, look at this person and ask yourself, “what is this person doing that is annoying me so much?” Once you identify it, see if you can own this as a part of yourself by remembering a time that you were late, acting foolishly, being obnoxious, or a number of other traits that you have tucked away. Now with the judgment gone, mentally thank the person for being a mirror for you and immediately, the charge is removed and inner peace is restored.

Remember, whatever charges us most is not about the other person.  It is always a sign of what we have not owned in ourselves yet. What bothers you the most are most often qualities that you have banned as being bad or wrong. Also, the qualities you admire or envy the most in others are also parts of your shadow that you have not allowed yourself to embrace. This may be due to beliefs of not being good enough or smart enough, etc. Whatever they are for you, shine your light on them and immediately feel this shift in your energy.

So as we go out into the world today, let’s practice complete acceptance for ourselves and everyone else. Because in the end, there is no ONE else… only ONE!

    Dear Patrick:

    I’m an asshole.

You’re right. I feel much better now.

Seriously, although I’m not Chopra’s biggest fan (he’s a little to “out there” for me. I’m more of a Wayne Dyer guy), this quote is right on the money. I have experienced this pheonomenon many times. Great topic.

By the way, my baby is angrier than your baby.
