Food, Fasting and Karma

I have never looked at food so differently than I do now. I just finished my 14 day fast at the Dharma Healing Center, a beautiful sanctuary in the island paradise of Koh Samui, Thailand. The week before I left for Koh Samui I met a middle aged man in Starbucks that asked me, “Why in the hell would you want to do that?” “For me, it’s the ultimate vacation,” I said. “Most people go on vacation and come home and need a vacation from their vacation. We eat too much, drink too much, spend too much and come home feeling spent. Not so with a fast. You come home lighter (on all levels), with more natural energy than you’ve had in years, crave fruits and veggies, and essentially, have a new lease on life.

There are so many actions people take to attempt to restore or maintain optimal health. We attempt to exercise, eat “right”, take supplements, do yoga, meditation, buy machines, bikes, swim, and the list goes on. Do they help us? Absolutely! But let me ask you this; if you were going to paint your car, would you paint right on top of all the rust, dirt and grime that is on it currently? Probably not. If you did, yes, the car would be a different color, but just how bright would that color be? We have to sand it down, return it to its natural state and essentially, start from scratch. All healing begins at ground zero.  Fasting is reaching ground zero.

We all have the divine intelligence (how to book) for our lives within us. Unfortunately for most, we are so busy all the time and have so many distractions, tuning in to our frequency and reading the manual is not always the easiest thing to do. During a fast, you silence the  noise, tune to your exact frequency and listen. Here’s some of what I heard when I tuned in.

  1. Food is energy just like everything else.
  2. The foods with the highest vibrations are the live foods (fruits and vegetables).
  3. As we raise our vibration, the foods we naturally desire change. We desire foods that match our energy.
  4. Food has Karma. When we eat foods, we take on the Karma of that food.
  5. Raw, live foods have the highest vibration, therefore provide the most energy.

Let me just say that this is not an anti-meat rant, just my inspired thoughts in the moment…

I had often wondered if men were meant to eat meat. Is it vital to our existence or is it something that we have just grown to enjoy?  Here are some of the beliefs that you may have been told about food. “Eat all of your food. There are starving children in Africa.” “Milk makes you big and strong”, “Eat your meat.  It makes you big and strong”, “Soup is good food, eat 5 meals a day, eat 1 meal a day, low fat is the best, no carbs, the right carbs, all fat and protein, just grapefruits, just soups, and the list goes on!” So much noise! We have been programmed to believe all of this silliness.  We are made to believe many things about life. This, My Friends, is the definition of MAKE BELIEVE! Our truths lie within.

So, back to the question, are we meant to eat meats? Let’s look at # 5.

If food is energy, it would make sense that the foods with the highest energy are those that are alive? Fruits and Veggies are alive. Here’s the interesting thing about food and energy. What type of food do you reach for when you are depressed or sad? Your vibration is low, so you grab for a low vibration food (junk food, fatty food, dessert, etc.).  When you are feeling at your best, exercising and life is good, it is effortless reaching for healthy foods. We actually want a nice piece of fruit when we feel good inside and out. In my opinion, this is why diets fail. We attempt to take a person that is vibrating at (lets put a number to it) 50hz and force them to eat only healthy foods that are vibrating at 150hz. The energies are just not aligned. Will power and discipline will work for a short time, but soon quantum physics takes over and before you know it, you are beating yourself up because you cannot stick to your “diet.”

Let’s face it, changing our actions is a futile attempt at best to make lasting changes in our lives. Lasting change happen at the level of “Being.” This goes for everything in our lives. We attract the same vibration of people, experiences and circumstances as our vibration. If our antennae is clogged or rusted, our answers will not be so obvious. If we are rusted, our ability to attract the source energy of the universe, is hindered, therefore our vibration lowered. This source energy at its highest level is LOVE. It all starts here!

Let’s apply that theory to the world. If society as a whole is vibrating 200 and love vibrates at 500, we can see that actions of unconditional love with ourselves and the world as a whole is a futile attempt at best. This is why it is so exciting to be alive right now because our the vibration of our planet is increasing so fast. We are moving further away from fear, ego-based living (low vibration) to that of love, heart-space (higher vibration). As we raise our consciousness, individually and as a whole, our actions naturally change and therefore, our reality as well. This is when all war and all the other ills of society will change and not a moment before. This is when we will naturally and effortlessly begin eating healthier, higher vibration foods.  This is what is happening today.

Back to foods.

#4 says that Food has Karma. Is it possible that as we eat foods, we take on the Karma of that food? And the Karma refers to the whole existence of the food and everyone involved with getting that food into your belly. So let’s take a piece of fruit that was grown in a beautiful garden, all organically grown, with a farmer that takes pride in his craft. This farmer treats all of his crops with reverence. He feels blessed to have the ability to provide the purest and most nourishing foods possible. His farm operates in harmony with the rest of the world. As does his life. These products reach the shelves of the local farmers market where you purchase it and use it to make a salad with a variety of colors, shapes and tastes. You bless the food and thank the universe for such an incredible gift. You infuse your love into the food with your blessing, and then you mindfully eat the salad, seeing the perfection in every bite. The energy and Karma of that live food enter your system and immediately your body thanks you with energy, vitality and health.

Now for that Steak. The cow lives in a pasture with thousands of others cows. They have very little room to roam any longer, so they live in close quarters with one another. There is not enough grass to feed them all so troughs of man-made foods are given. These foods are filled with preservatives and hormones to make the cows as big as possible and as quick as possible because the growing population demands more beef. The cows, now, not living nor eating naturally, are fed until its day has come. Off to the slaughter house. The animals are poked and prodded into the Killing fields. As the knife is lifted, fear fills the cow, toxic hormones are secreted into its system and then one by one, their life force is drained. All of this to provide us with a nice T’bone steak or Leather shoes or bags. And, please, once again, understand that this is not a “don’t eat meat campaign.” Just food for thought.

Suffering, confinement, toxins, hormones and killing all become a part of the karma of this animal. You buy the steak at the grocery store, go home, cook it and eat it… is that Karma now a part of you? Your body knows the answer.  It thanks us for our ignorance by raising your blood pressure, clogging your arteries, slowing down your digestion and slowing you down.  The unconscious acts of everyone involved in bringing this food to your belly becomes you and you it.  Not to mention that the food is dead, has very little energy, is very difficult for our bodies to digest and become rancid in our system. It’s no wonder why meats can be linked to every major cause of death today. Look what we are putting into our body and spirit. Our higher self knows that this is not in the highest good of all. We know that this is not honoring all living things. We know that this is not making the world a better place. But, we only come to this realization when we evolve to a point where our Beingness shifts from me to we; when we start thinking globally about every one of our thoughts, words, actions and deeds.  Soon this information will be common sense.  The eating of meat will seem absurd, just as War, disease and everything else that is not LOVE.  This is what is occurring today.I’ll never forget my time in Bali and how everything on that island seemed to live in harmony. The people on scooters just seemed to float around one another as if they were all connected. The relationship with the spirits (heavenly and earthly) as they honored them every day. I asked a wise Balinese man about pests and their crops. He replied, “The pest eat what they are going to eat and we eat the rest.” To them, there is no difference between the pests and us. Its all WE!  They understand that what we do to the pests, we do to ourselves. That what we do to the earth, we do to ourselves.

Fasting clear much of this Karma. It resets you back to your source. Its clears the slate for you let go of all those erroneous beliefs around food and replace them with truth. This is where all healing can occur.

Time to wrap this rap up! I share this with all of you to hopefully awaken you to what you already know.  The greatest teachers in my life never told me anything that I didn’t already know at a higher level.  They simply validated the truth within me. For me, it is this awareness that is the key to living a joyful, passionate, fulfilling, purposeful life. Sure, ignorance is bliss; but only at a surface level. We suffer and we know it!  The more aware and conscious we are of our actions, the faster we move toward the light (enlightenment). And the more we move toward LOVE (light), the closer we are to Heaven on Earth.  We are all one. The world, universe, bodies, animals, pests… one. This is all we have and that “all” is everything.  Thoughts?

Namaste.

    Lakeshia,
Depending on the type of fast, physical hunger will usually subside within 3 to 4 days. Consequently, this is the most challenging period for many during a fast. However, many times, the hunger may not be only physical, but a result of emotional or mental wounds resurfacing. Cleansing allows for healing on all levels. It is this healing that deepens our connection spiritually.
    Namaste,
    Patrick

    Hi Patrick,

I just stumbled onto your site, and I believe it is a happy synchronicity because I am preparing myself to do the master cleanse. I have struggled with weight problems my whole life, and am also going through a difficult but amazing time in my life of emotional and spiritual growth and healing…I am resolved to fast for 10-12 days, and was wondering if you could give me any advice about staying strong through the enormous physical hunger that I usually feel and also the physical achiness and pain I am said will accompany my body releasing toxins during this period…I really want to do this and stick to it through out the duration this time, and really want to become as optimally healthy and healed as I can.

Thank you for your kind advice :)

Have you considered the coaching program? You will not only have support throughout the entire fast, but will be guided in the cleansing of all levels, not just the pysical. You will learn information and tools that you can take with you as you further your journey. Beyond doing the coaching, I would say for you to build you belief in fasting as much as possible and set your intention as to why you are embarking on this journey. The more intention you create around the fast, the better prepared you will be. It may also help if you just allow your body to tell you when to stop fasting. Sometimes when clients mentally set the number of days, they look forward to the end instead of embracing and enjoying the day to day magic. Hope this helps.

    Hi Patrick,

I’m so happy to reconnect with you today. BTW, I love your posts and website. So much has happened since Bali 2 years ago… This week is my last week at work, YES, can you believe it? I was laid off and I know that it was divine intervention, the universe nudging me to move forward. I am at the threshold of many choices and many paths to follow and thinking that fasting might assist in my quest for next steps and soul’s purpose. My biggest concern is withdrawal from caffeine. The few times I’ve attempted to fast, I was bed-ridden with debilitating migraines and couldn’t go on. Any advice on how to not be paralysed with throbbing pain?

    All my love,

    Sabine

    • Hey Sabine. So glad we have stayed in touch as well. I still see you in that funky red hat be-boppin’ through Bali. As far as fasting goes, if you are feeling the pull, than I say move with it. Caffeine withdrawals will typically only last a day or two at the most. The cleansing crisis will usually last for 3 to 4 days depending on how deep of a fast you are wanting to go. If you are really concerned about caffeine withdrawals, you have a few other options besides Just being with it. 1. you could start reducing it gradually as much as before you start your fast. 2. accupunture and pressure points during the first few days of fast will help. 3. drink a bit of caffeine during the first couple of days of your fast. 4. use coffee enemas, which i highly recommend. These will all but eliminate most/all of your withdrawals symptoms. Hope this helps. Sending you love, Patrick
